"Just Getting By" Bess O'Brien

"Just Getting By" movie showing in Springfied was a great success. We had about 38 people attend and we can't thank you enough for all of your for the all of your support and great questions.

Thank you to Springfield Supported Housing Program, Springfield Family Center, Building Bright Futures,Turning Point Recovery Center of Springfield, Vermont, Inc.,SEVCA and Project Action for bringing the movie showing to Springfield and having a great panel discussion with our guests.

Just Getting By is a sweeping, and yet intimate look at the lives of Vermonters who are struggling with food and housing insecurity.Vermont has the second highest rate of homeless people in the United States, right after California. One third of Vermonters struggle to put food on the table. These are big issues for a small state. Just Getting By focuses on these issues in the lives of everyday people.

The film tells the stories of working families, folks who are homeless and accessing food shelves and soup kitchens and people who are living in temporary hotel/motel programs. In addition, the film focuses on New Americans grappling with the cost of living in America, Native people creating innovative farming practices and folks on the ground providing services to their fellow Vermonters in need.
Just Getting By explores the day to day challenges and incredible resiliency that low-income Vermonters bear witness to every day.

The film was shot during 2022-23 by director Bess O’Brien and cinematographer Patrick Kennedy. “We wanted to capture the day to day lives of Vermonters who were living paycheck to paycheck and who were struggling to keep food on the table and a roof over their head. We also wanted to show the incredible resiliency and courage of folks who have very little and still manage to get up every day and strive for a better life.” O’Brien says.
“We hope by touring the film across the state that we can raise consciousness about these pressing issues of food and housing insecurity with Vermont audiences across the state.” Says O’Brien.

The movie is produced by Kingdom County Productions. There will be Q and A’s after each screening of the movie with the Director, folks from the movie and audience members.

Landlord Appreciation Dinner October 2024

Congratulations to Mike Kemp for being the most outstanding Landlord of the year 2024!
Back to the 80’s Landlord Appreciation Dinner was a blast. This year the dinner was located at the Hartness House. Maple Street Catering served a delectable “Pasta Your Way Station” served with salad and a decadent dessert to follow. Our landlords went on a guided tour of the underground tunnels and got to explore “underground access to the equatorial turret telescope that James Hartness designed and built into the front lawn. The tunnels also house the Hartness-Porter Museum of Amateur Telescope Making - and, rumor has it, the occasional ghost” Hartness | Vermont's Most Memorable Inn

Downtown Holiday Program - Sticker Map

Layla Burke Kalinen/Eagle Times photo

Springfield Supportive Housing Program Americorps Volunteer Courtney Campbell and her daughter, assistant Grinch Bricklee Adams, 7, set up at 56 Main Street in Springfield, VT, Friday evening to wish holiday cheer and pass out treats to children as part of the Winter Holiday Sticker Map adventure. Twenty-five businesses and local organizations in the downtown area participated in the joint event organized by Springfield On The Move and Springfield Chamber of Commerce.

The sticker maps lead participants on an adventure throughout the downtown area on a reinvention of a trick-or-treat-style contest for children of all ages to collect tiny trinkets, candy and stickers.
The adventure helped launch an evening of Christmas-themed activities in Springfield. Avant Vermont Dance performed the third-act of its Seasons series, “Winter,” and Claflin Family Food set up to serve food. The Springfield Community Band brought holiday cheer with a little music to warm up the crowd for the community tree lighting ceremony at which Santa made his grand entrance.
